Typical Texas Meals

One thing most Americans know for sure about the people of Texas is that they know how to cook, and they know how to eat. Just the smell of a hot barbeque and warm corn bread in the oven makes our hearts go a-flutter with the thought of getting a taste. For those of us who don’t have the privileges of dining in the Texas state lines, here are some common Texas dishes we can drool over.

Breakfast

Texans don’t settle for the quick and simple breakfast of coffee and toast that many of us go for. Breakfast is always hot and hardy. It is typically warm biscuits or muffins with butter, jam, or honey. But that is not all. Then comes the meat. Of course there are eggs. There is also the possibility of ham steaks, pork chops, sausage, or roast beef hash. Fried steak or venison is also an option. Don’t forget the traditional fried potatoes, as well as hot cakes with syrup or honey.

Dinner

The most important, and biggest, meal in the Texans’ day is lunch, also known as dinner. It typically includes friend chicken, buttered rice, and hot biscuits with gravy, along with green beans, leaf lettuce, and sliced tomatoes to balance it out. It can also be baked short ribs, baked corn, corn bread, cole slaw, and mustard greens, followed by pecan pie. And of course, there is always iced tea around. Whatever the combination, a Texas-style dinner is always hardy.

Oddly enough, the last meal of the day, supper, is leftovers of dinner. Which is understandable, considering the amount of effort that goes into preparing the first two meals and the amount of stomach space devoted to eating them, a small meal to end the day is probably a welcome tradition.
